Pictures in Quizoo

Many questions come with a picture. Each one is used under its own licence, and some of those licences ask for the person who made it to be named.

Where they come from

  • Wikimedia Commons, the media library behind Wikipedia.
  • Unsplash, a library of free-to-use photographs.
  • Public archives, such as NASA, NOAA and museums’ open collections.

How each licence is credited

LicenceWhat is shown
Public domain, CC0Nothing — it is free to use without a credit.
Unsplash LicenseNothing — Unsplash asks for no credit.
CC BY, CC BY-SAThe Creative Commons mark on the picture, with its author and licence behind it.

Seeing a credit

Tap the CC mark on the picture on your phone. Who made it and its licence are there straight away. The link to where it came from appears once the answer is up — a picture’s file name can name what is in it, so the link never gives a question away.

Every picture is cropped to fit the screen, and some are partly hidden for a question — a flag in grey, say — with the original shown once the answer is up. The credit says which.

The picture shown once the answer is up may also be a different one — the answer itself, after a picture chosen to keep you guessing. It is credited the same way, and its credit comes up with it.

Your picture, and it should not be here?

If a picture is yours and its credit is wrong, or it should not be used at all, write to [email protected] and tell us which question it is in. We will correct the credit or take the picture down.
